Revived in the 1960s after being banned by the Canadian government, pow-wows offer tribes a chance to gather for ceremonial competitions involving music and dancing. "Everyone is welcome . . . but a lot of our own people don’t even know about this," says Kathy James, a member of the Cree and Blackfoot nations.
